iPhone 14 is unlikely to have in-display Touch ID... but the iPhone 15 might
Will Apple ever equip one of its iPhones with an under-display fingerprint scanner? That’s a question that’s been asked a lot, and one which so far sources have disagreed on. But now there’s more evidence in favor of it happening, as Apple has just been granted a related patent - though don't expect it on the iPhone 14 .
The patent – spotted by Patently Apple - is for under-display optical fibers, which could be used to accurately capture fingerprint data.
Apple’s method appears designed to deliver lower optical transmission losses than other solutions, which could mean its fingerprint scanning would be faster and more accurate. But the details of the patent are less interesting than the fact that Apple has patented this tech at all, as it suggests under-display Touch ID actually could be in the works.
There are a couple of caveats though. First off, plenty of things get patented and many of them never see the light of day in products, so just because Apple is exploring an idea, it doesn’t mean we’ll see it happen.
Certainly, we wouldn’t expect under-display Touch ID on the iPhone 14 range, as there isn’t much sign of that yet – though one early leak did point in that direction. But it’s possible we could see it on the iPhone 15 or beyond.
The other caveat is that while the focus of this patent appears to be fingerprint scanning, the tech also mentions facial recognition applications, so in other words it could allow for under-display Face ID, which is something there’s much more evidence that Apple is working on.
So we could see that instead (or as well), but given that leaked images show visible Face ID components on the iPhone 14 range, that too is likely over a year away.
Analysis: Touch ID would be good, but probably won’t happen
While there’s been talk over the years that Apple is working on under-display Touch ID, the most recent leaks suggest this won’t happen. So while this patent provides some hope of a Touch ID future, the bulk of the evidence is still against it.
That’s a slight shame, as there are situations where Face ID just isn’t as good, for example when you want to unlock your phone without angling it in front of your face.
Still, those occasions are likely to be rare for most people, and now that Face ID works even with a mask on , there are few major drawbacks to the system, so while the option of Touch ID would be appreciated, it’s far from essential, and is unlikely therefore to be a focus for Apple.
7 new Garmin Forerunner 955 and 255 watches unveiled in surprise leak
The Garmin Forerunner 955 and 255 watches have been found on a Singaporean government agency website, suggesting that their release is imminent.
The leak was first spotted by Gadgets & Wearables , when the publication searched the website of the Singaporean government’s Telecoms Licensing System agency for the term “Forerunner 255”. Listed here are no less than six Forerunner 255 models: a standard 255, a 255s – which is presumed to be a smaller version of the already-lightweight mid-range watch – and several slightly more premium “music” versions of both watches.
However, we also tried a separate search on the same website for the Forerunner 955, and lo and behold, we found it. It’s a single model rather than several, but you can see the Singaporean government agency's listing below:
The Garmin Forerunner 245 and 945 watches were first released in April 2019, over three years ago, and they're as popular as ever – which means new models in the ranges are big news. In recent months, rumors of their impending replacements have been gathering steam, notably when a massive leak potentially revealed Garmin’s forthcoming watches .
Analysis: Six new Forerunner 255 watches?
The six different models listed by the Singaporean agency are restricted to names and brief descriptions. The Forerunner 255 and Forerunner 255s could be considered the “base” models, with Bluetooth and ANT+.
However, the four more advanced Forerunners (two 255 and two 255s) are listed as “music” models that are also packing Wi-Fi connectivity, but there are not many other clues to determine any other differentiating factors.
Could one of them be a solar watch, extending the battery life as you run? Potentially, but it's unlikely at a mid-range price point – although, it’s not the first time Garmin would have used solar technology in this update cycle, as January's Fenix 7 arrived with both solar and non-solar options.
Meanwhile, the Garmin Forerunner 955 is listed as just the one model, as you might expect: while the Forerunner 245 was a mid-range watch that might have to pick and choose its features to stay in that competitive price range, the Forerunner 945 is a top-end triathlon watch that can do it all – no need for an ‘s’ model here. We're eyeing a potential June release date for more info.
Memorial Day mattress sale 2022: the best early deals
Memorial Day mattress sales are slowly starting to launch now that we're into May, with early offers from the likes of Bear and Helix already live. Most companies are still running extended Mothers' Day sales, but we're expecting them to follow suit and switch over to Memorial Day branding in the coming days and weeks.
A good Memorial Day mattress sale can save you up to several hundred dollars on a top-rated hybrid, memory foam, organic or cooling mattress from even the best mattress brands. Traditionally, prices plummet in May, before rising to their highest of the year during the summer and not returning to the same low levels until October/November.
We're expecting to see a similar trend again this year, but as inflation and prices soar, we're not sure that we'll see the record-low price drops of previous Memorial Day sales this year. What we can tell you is you'll only find the best-value Memorial Day mattress sales in our round up: we want to help where we can with the cost of living crisis, and we're being extremely selective with the deals we show here.
That means our list of the best Memorial Day mattress deals might be smaller than in previous years, but there will still be an option for everyone. We'll share our thoughts on each mattress and provide a price analysis, so you can decide whether an offer is right. Where the quality is high enough, we'll also include a wider selection of lower-budget mattreses too. And if you'd prefer to search the sales for a deal yourself, you'll find our expert shopping tips further down the page.
In the meantime, here's our pick of the best mattress sales available now. Some of these are official Memorial Day mattress sales; others are very good deals where we don't expect the prices to fall by much more, if at all, between now and May 30 (that's why we've not included Helix's early-acess Memorial Day sale yet - we think prices will fall again by another $50).

3 of the best Memorial Day mattress deals
Memorial Day always falls on the last Monday in May, so Memorial Day 2022 will take place on Monday 30 May. It’s a bank holiday and a federal holiday, and many online and in-store retailers normally launch sales to help you save on a wide range of products - including mattresses.
What is a Memorial Day mattress sale?
There are normally thousands of products discounted for Memorial Day, and mattresses are no exception. So the Memorial Day mattress sales are dedicated deals launched by retailers and manufacturers to help you save money if you’re looking to buy a new mattress.
Those savings aren’t always the same though – some brands and retailers offer either money off or free bedding, while others offer both. The latter are usually the best deals for sheer value for money, depending on the cost of the bed you are looking at.
Is Memorial Day a good time to buy a mattress?
We’ve been covering mattress deals and sales for a number of years and have pinpointed specific times of the year when you can get a good mattress for a lot less. The Black Friday mattress deals are usually laden with cheap mattress prices and free bedding gifts, and these roll over into Cyber Monday mattress deals .
Outside of these two, the Presidents’ Day mattress sales in February, followed by the Memorial Day mattress sales in May are a good time to buy a mattress for less. That’s because, from our research and trend analysis of the past few years, prices tend to rise over the summer months before falling again in time for Labour Day in September.
So if you want or need a new mattress and you’ve missed out on all the major shopping events so far, the 2022 Memorial Day mattress sales are your next big chance to save on better sleep.
If past years are anything to go by, online and in-store retailers and manufacturers will be launching sale offers this May. Not all of them will be worth your time though, as some deals will only be marginally better than the sales on offer most months.
That’s why we’ve created this guide to help you sort the top offers from the rest. We’ll be updating it regularly as we approach 2022’s Memorial Day mattress sales on 30 May, and will be highlighting the deals we think are worth buying and why. We’ll do this by showing you:
We’d recommend only looking at retailers and manufacturers that offer a mattress trial period that enables you to test out your new bed at home for at least 30 nights. This is the average time it takes to get used to a new bed.
Our other expert tip is to check that the brand has published a clear returns policy on its website or has one available for you to read in-store, as you need to be aware of any small print. For example, some request that you use a mattress protector on your mattress during the trial period to keep it safe from spills and stains. If you don’t use one, you may not be able to return it if you change your mind.
Brands and retailers we know and trust include Avocado Green, Casper, Cocoon by Sealy, DreamCloud, GhostBed, Helix Sleep, Leesa, Mattress Firm, Purple, Nectar Sleep, Saatva, and Tempur-Pedic, but there are plenty of others to consider on Memorial Day.
Are mattress toppers and bedding on sale too?
Yes, you can normally find a wide range of bedding in the Memorial Day mattress sale. Many of the best mattress toppers are discounted and these are an instant way to upgrade the comfort of your existing bed if you don’t have the budget for a new mattress.
Other bedding you’ll find in the sales include bed sheets, mattress protectors, comforters, weighted blankets and some of the best pillows for comfier sleep. In recent years, we’ve seen brands and retailers bundle in some of these bedding items as free gifts when you purchase a mattress. Top brands for giving you free premium bedding include Awara, DreamCloud, Cocoon by Sealy, Helix Sleep, and Nectar Sleep.
The Memorial Day mattress sales are also a good time to nab bedding that isn’t normally discounted. For example, luxury sleep brand Saatva has been known to offer a sitewide discount ranging from 12-15%, and that can be used on its weighted blankets, pillows, toppers, sheets and more. That said, a recent Saatva mattress sale offered this exact same discount, so we’re hoping for a larger saving from the brand in May.
We’ve been reporting on Memorial Day mattress deals for a few years now, and there are two things in particular – in addition to free shipping – that we recommend you look for before spending a dime:
